Abstract In this study, we examine the eeects that traac patterns and virtual channels have on the performance of wormhole routing algorithms. In particular we look at two algorithms, dimension-ordered routing and an adaptive algorithm based on Duato's methodology. From simulations of these schemes, we rst show that the adaptive algorithm needs fewer virtual channels than dimension-ordered routing before its performance plateaus. Then, we show that depending on the traac pattern, dimension-ordered routing, supplemented with additional virtual channels, can approach that of the adaptive algorithm.
